Global creative director of Fashion Revolution, Orsola De Castro, is one of these trailblazers. Orsola de Castro is an internationally recognised opinion leader in sustainable fashion. Her career started as a designer with the pioneering upcycling label From Somewhere, which she launched in 1997 until 2014. Now, De Castro is the co-founder and creative director of Fashion Revolution; dedicated to the global movement in fashion. She wrote ‘Loved Clothes Last’ in 2021 which explored the myriad ways to mend, re-wear and breathe new life into your wardrobe to achieve a more sustainable lifestyle.

What are your thoughts on the NY Fashion Act?
The fashion industry is not only a significant contributor to pollution but also a prominent user of exploited, forced, child labour across the globe.
The Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act represents a groundbreaking measure aimed at holding companies accountable and creating a fairer environment for those already committed to ethical practices. If approved, it will position New York as a pioneer in promoting accountability and sustainability within the global fashion sector.

How does it work?
➡️These companies will have to map at least 50% of their supply chains.
➡️They’ll have to report on the impact they are having. This includes wages, energy, emissions, water, and chemicals, plus their material production volumes, such as cotton, polyester, and leather.
➡️Companies then have to set a plan using science-based targets to reduce their emissions in line with the Paris Accord, of 2 degrees celsius.
💰The government will fine companies that don’t provide the information they are supposed to. The proceeds will go towards disadvantaged communities.
💪In the last week, there have also been calls to strengthen the bill even more to protect garment workers and the environment. (see @fash_rev rev for more)

The Watercolour Abstract Floral Print Taffeta was created in France and hand-picked by the @johncharlesuk design team at @wearepremierevision in Paris. This fabric was used to create the AW/2011 collection and can now be bought on the Last Yarn website.

Overproduction is a big problem within the clothing industry. Clothes produced cheaply and at mass scale leave a negative footprint on the environment.
1. The average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago — The UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion.
2. Less than 1% of textiles and clothes are genuinely recycled into new textiles and clothes — The Ellen MacArthur Foundation
3.Fast Fashion produces more carbon emissions per minute than driving a car around the world six times. — Oxfam
4. Extending the average life of clothes by just nine months would save £5 billion in resources used to supply, launder, and dispose of clothing. — WRAP
Let’s start to change the way the industry works to a system that prioritises ecological and social transparency.

On Wednesday, we hosted our second #LastYarn panellist talk at the @jcalondon .
The evening explored how surplus fabric could be a solution to overproduction in fashion with the fantastic @sanssoucie @biancaffoley @rebekahroy_ and @ngoni answering questions on all things dead stock.

To celebrate this, we are spotlighting the fantastic @tiagotcorreia from Last Yarn’s previous event on digital solutions to fashion industry waste.
@tiagotcorreia is the CEO of @transcend.pictures , a transmedia entertainment studio, showcasing digital fashion outfits in its creations was one of our fantastic panellists.
@tiagotcorreia was a success with the students.
Along with @ngoni , @adamandrascik and @bfg_graham , he highlighted how we are entering an era where creativity will be the great differentiator, as digital becomes the great equaliser in the fashion industry.
