Sustainable fashion is expensive: myth or fact?

Responsible brands do come with a higher price tag when compared to fast fashion labels. These labels can keep prices low due to low living wages for workers and not following sustainable production practices.

However, regarding cost-per-wear, higher-quality items (including second-hand clothing) you’ll wear again and again, end up costing less in the long run, despite the initial investment.

Vestiare Collective’s recent study showed this: a new pair of $74.48 fashion shoes cost $3.38 per wear, while a pair of $96.84 pre-owned luxury shoes only cost $2.65 for each wear.

Sustainable fashion is budget-friendly fashion…I promise. Ethical fashion doesn’t mean spending lots of money and opting for luxury alternatives: it means making the most of what you have and embracing versatility.

Second-hand shops are treasure troves for anyone interested in fashion. Pre-worn and vintage items bring unique takes on trends, and are easy to find at local markets, charity shops, or thrift stores. A more affordable option, you’ll also be supporting local economies, and help reduce the amount of clothes going to landfills.

Or a good tailor can help you sew, repair or re-fashion the clothes you already own for a lower cost than buying something new.

Our favourite means of consciously consuming is upcycling. Like tailoring, upcycling allows you to refashion unworn clothes torn, stained, or blemished into something new through dyeing, sewing etc.
