It is surprising how much excitement scissors can generate. The passion, precision, and traditional craftsmanship involved in creating Ernest Wright scissors are peerless.

As the last remaining heritage manufacturer of scissors and shears in the UK, Ernest Wright has been handcrafting exceptional scissors in Sheffield, England, since 1902. Recently honoured with the HCA President’s Award for Endangered Crafts, their scissors, backed by a lifetime guarantee, continue to be produced using skills handed down through generations. Despite high demand, with orders taking up to 10 weeks, the dedication to quality never wavers.

In 2018, Paul Jacobs, co-owner of Ernest Wright, embarked on a journey that started when he heard of the plight of the fifth-generation owner whilst waiting for a pair of Ernest Wright scissors in the Netherlands. Jacobs loved the scissors so much that he drove to Sheffield with a friend to meet the last two putters, Cliff and Eric (both aged 75). “We fell in love with the craft and ended up buying the company,” Paul recalls.

Paul and his team began by repairing old machinery, sourcing raw materials, learning everything about the trade and educating young people, transferring the invaluable skills of the veteran craftsmen to a new generation. “We created a small team where everyone knows their role but can also take over other roles in the company. This way, we focus more on details and quality without cutting corners,” says Paul.

Despite the challenges of a skills shortage and without government support, he believes in the business model of producing the finest handmade scissors. “Our apprentices must have the right eye-hand coordination and passion for craft metalwork. If they fit in, they get full support to make mistakes and learn. We don’t push for higher production; we focus on quality.”

Ernest Wright’s scissors are made using specialised, often ancient machines, some dating back to 1920, that according to Paul, work perfectly well and are a joy to operate.

The process involves several stages of grinding, hardening, and assembling, with each step requiring years of mastery. “The putter’s role, which involves putting together the scissors, is highly skilled. The blades need to be hollow ground, curved, and twisted correctly, which takes about five years to learn,” Paul explains.

The commitment to quality over volume has been the cornerstone of Ernest Wright’s enduring success. “Starting with the best materials” and “striving for perfection at every step is crucial,” Paul notes.

Ernest Wright’s collaboration with Last Yarn to offer students a pair of scissors highlights the role of quality craftsmanship in fashion. “Why do we buy inferior products which we use and throw away? I hear from tailors that if they use proper tools, it makes their lives easier. Collaborating with Last Yarn helps us reach a younger audience and emphasises the importance of buying good tools that last a lifetime, which is better for the environment and the quality of the design,” Paul says.

Looking ahead, Paul envisions Ernest Wright as a healthy place where it is joyful to work.

“We strive to make the best possible tools for passionate creators and enjoy connecting with a wide range of craftspeople. The craft industry allows for genuine, authentic business relationships,” he shares.

We get onto the topic of the internet and its role in connecting our brands with niche markets worldwide. From paper art to upholstery, classic car restoration, and even falconry, their scissors and shears reach diverse customers. “It’s amazing how our products reach so many different places, even small islands in the Pacific,” Paul exclaims.

The story of Ernest Wright is not just about survival but thriving through unwavering dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Their journey from near closure to becoming a beacon of traditional craft is a testament to the timeless value of skilled hands.
