Having worked in the fashion industry as a designer for almost 10 years, Freya was burnt out and exhausted.
Confronted with the sheer quantity of throw-away clothing that was shipping out under never-ending price crunches, Freya Simonne was born. Using exclusively vintage textiles, Freya creates beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces.
- The last item you would give away and why?
My Freya Simonne dress, which has a matching one for my daughter. It holds lots of special memories.
- Favourite place in the world?
I have a few, but I would probably have to say the mountains, especially during winter, in France or Italy.
- Silk, cotton, or cashmere and why?
Cashmere – super cosy, and as long as the animal is treated correctly, it’s not too resource-intensive.
- Best book ever?
I actually can’t remember the last full book I read. I am currently reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, which is really interesting and inspiring.
- What is the soundtrack to your life?
My wedding dancefloor playlist from when we got married earlier this year. I play it on repeat—it’s a good mix of soul, 90s music, and more contemporary stuff too.
- A quote to change your life?
“We are the first generation to know about climate change and the last to be able to do something about it,” Barack Obama.
- One thing you wish you’d learned at school, or the one thing you learned in school that you couldn’t live without?
My creativity and sewing!
- Who would you want to be stuck in a lift with?
David Attenborough, or Queen Elizabeth, had she still been alive. I love her.
- If you had the power to change anything you wanted in the world, what would it be?
Peace and understanding between all, and not being driven by money.
- Three things your friends would say about you?
Funny, caring, and thoughtful.
- Your three favourite fabrics:
Vintage fabrics are my absolute favourite. I adore the cutwork and embroidery from the Victorian era.
