#FashionRevolutionWeek (the world’s largest fashion activism movement) starts this Sunday.
Whether you dedicate ten minutes on your route home from work or five days of intense activism, reflecting on how our fashion choices and the wider fashion industry has an effect on social and environmental change is the first step to real change.
The theme for the 2024 campaign is centred around ‘How to be a Fashion Revolutionary.’
So here goes Last Yarn’s three fashion revolutionary acts:
1. Education: Every morning, make it your goal to read one article related to fashion and the environment. @sourcingjournal is a fab way to get no-nonsense information, or for more fashion-related facts, check out @voguebusiness Business.
2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Try to consciously consume as much as possible by restraining from buying unnecessary items and only buying second-hand when required.

Orsola de Castro is an internationally recognised opinion leader in sustainable fashion. Her career started as a designer with the pioneering upcycling label From Somewhere, which she launched in 1997 until 2014. She is now the creative director of Esethica, a creative agency for change in the fashion industry.

Did you know that lace-making dates back to ancient times, with evidence of early forms of lace found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 2500 BCE?
Or that there are various types of lace, including bobbin lace, needle lace, crochet lace, and machine-made lace. Each type has unique characteristics and techniques.
These days, the majority of lace is made from polyester and mass produced. Since this is a petroleum derivative, that is made using a combination of artificial chemicals that are harmful to both planet and people, we would always recommend buying second-hand.

A recent post by @goodonyou_app explained why the mob wives trend is *really* unsustainable.
As @goodonyou_app put it, Micro trends like this encourage consumption as fast fashion profits. Moreover, this trend is focused on harmful materials like animal furs, faux furs made from plastics, and leathers that hurt animals while negatively affecting labour and land.

Some of our favourite insights included:
- Digital fashion can be more efficient, most sustainable and more fun
- Digital design can be that great equaliser - for example, Jeff Bezos (one of the richest men in the world) has the same phone as you
However
- It is important to safe guard creativity and copyright
- Be careful with the bias placed inherently in the tech
- Think about how we can navigate the emotional connection we have with clothing into digital fabric form to solve fashion’s overconsumption and its appeal with the new!
To quote @ngoni “Right now is the time to buy into some of these ideas. Make them your own. Make money but also think about the world you want to see because we’ve gotta build it, we’ve gotta live in it.”
